School Wellness Initiative

Creating Healthy and Equitable Learning Environments

The School Wellness Initiative is a comprehensive, multi-component program of the Pottstown Regional Community Foundation (PRCF). The initiative strengthens whole-child wellbeing in schools across the Pottstown region by helping educators integrate physical health, nutrition, mental wellness, social-emotional learning, and staff wellness into everyday practice.
Through grants, professional learning, technical assistance, and a nationally recognized wellness framework, PRCF supports schools in building healthier, more equitable learning environments where students and staff can thrive.

Why School Wellness Matters

Health and learning are inseparable

Healthy students attend school more regularly, engage more fully in the classroom, and achieve stronger long-term outcomes. Evidence shows that daily physical activity, nutritious foods, social-emotional learning, and mental health supports all contribute to improved academic success.

Equity in access

PRCF prioritizes resources for schools serving communities with the greatest need. The initiative ensures that all students can access wellness opportunities, regardless of zip code or background.

Strong educators and strong systems

The annual Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds Institute provides educators and youth-serving professionals with timely, evidence-based practices related to trauma-informed care, mental health, equity, wellness leadership, and instructional strategies. Participants earn professional development credits and benefit from ongoing peer support.

Community partnerships

PRCF brings together school districts, early childhood programs, nonprofits, universities, and health and human service agencies to strengthen wellness across entire systems.

Core Components of the Initiative

The School Wellness Initiative supports schools through four aligned components that work together to promote best practices and measurable improvement.

1. Annual Grant Opportunity

Schools can apply for funding during the PRCF Spring grant round to support wellness policies, programs, and staffing. Competitive proposals align with School Wellness Initiative expectations, including participation in collaborative meetings, data collection, and engagement with the School Wellness Checklist.

2. School Wellness Checklist Challenge

Since 2015, the region has implemented the Medical University of South Carolina Boeing Center for Children’s Wellness model. Schools complete the evidence-based Checklist to assess wellness practices, set SMART goals, receive coaching, and qualify for Wellness Awards. Research shows that Checklist participation improves attendance, behavior, staff engagement, and school culture.

3. School Collaborative

This professional learning network brings together district wellness coordinators, building-level wellness champions, and regional partners several times per year. Schools share strategies, plan coordinated wellness activities, and learn from peers across the tri-county region.

4. Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds Institute (HBHM)

HBHM is a free annual conference held each August for educators and youth-serving professionals. PRCF serves as lead sponsor and convener, providing training aligned with regional wellness goals. The event typically features plenaries, breakout sessions, partner exhibitions, and opportunities for professional development credit.

How Schools Participate

Schools opt into the initiative each year by registering for the School Wellness Checklist. Participating schools receive:

  • Technical assistance and coaching
  • Access to wellness resources and toolkits
  • Opportunities for SMART Goal bonuses and performance-based awards
  • Invitations to all Collaborative meetings and learning sessions
  • Opportunities to apply for Spring wellness grants
  • Free participation in the Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds Institute

Participation is voluntary, but engagement with the Checklist is incentivized through recognition, awards, and funding.

Research and Evidence Base

Research and Evidence Base

The initiative is grounded in:

  • MUSC Boeing Center for Children’s Wellness research and evaluation
  • CDC and National Academy of Medicine recommendations for school wellness environments
  • Annual program data tracked through the School Wellness Checklist
  • Grant performance reports submitted by participating school districts
  • Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds Institute evaluations and session feedback

This evidence guides annual updates to Checklist guidelines, award structures, and training priorities.

Partners and Implementation Structure

Program Timeline and Milestones

2018 to 2022
Program Launch and Growth

PRCF (formerly PAHWF) launched the School Wellness Initiative with a two-year grant opportunity for schools. The early phase emphasized the WSCC model, school wellness coordinators, and adoption of the MUSC School Wellness Checklist. Schools engaged in shared learning and system-level planning through the School Collaborative.

2022 to 2024
Strengthening Systems and Expanding Reach

From 2022 through 2024, the initiative focused on strengthening school wellness systems and expanding regional reach. PRCF increased investment in wellness coordinators and building level wellness leaders, which helped more schools engage deeply with wellness efforts. Participation in the School Collaborative and related peer networks grew, creating stronger connections among districts and partners. During this period, more schools adopted and actively used the School Wellness Checklist, and attendance at the Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds Institute (HBHM) increased, with broader representation from schools across Montgomery, Chester, and Berks Counties.

Fiscal Year 2025
Record Participation and Awards

In Fiscal Year 2025, the School Wellness Initiative reached record levels of participation and investment. Schools representing more than 27,000 students took part in the Checklist program and related activities. Significant funding was directed to SMART Goal bonuses, performance based awards, and school mini grants that supported concrete wellness projects. Ringing Rocks Elementary in Pottsgrove School District was recognized as the 2024 to 2025 Wellness Award Champion. PRCF also awarded Spring 2025 school grants aligned with the School Wellness Funding Guidance. Total school grants in FY25 exceeded 390,000 dollars, including both core school grants and mini grants, and cumulative School Wellness Checklist awards since 2015 surpassed 460,000 dollars.

Fiscal Year 2026
Strategic Priorities and Sustainability

Looking ahead to Fiscal Year 2026, the initiative is focused on strategic priorities and long term sustainability. Budget commitments include continued support for the School Wellness Checklist program, HBHM, School Collaborative logistics, awards and convenings, and training for wellness coordinators. To manage growth and complexity, the initiative is scaling administrative support with contractor assistance. Core goals include strengthening coordinator capacity, expanding school and district participation, and supporting more than 120 anticipated wellness champions across the region.
